Dr. Bonlie has found that many people need evaluation and treatment for Adrenal Fatigue. It has proven to be one of the critical foundation treatments for many patients because it influences so many other body systems and functions.
One of the main functions of the adrenal glands is to help our bodies respond and adapt to stress. Too much stress over too long a time causes the adrenal glands to lose their ability to respond normally. Adrenal hormones are an integral part of the hormone system. When the adrenals do not respond normally it affects many functions throughout the body.
Symptoms of Adrenal Gland Problems

- Chronic pain
- Craving for sweets
- Difficulty with menopause
- Dry and thin skin
- Excessive fatigue
- Food allergies & sensitivities
- Frequent illness
- Heart palpitations
- Inability to concentrate
- Low body temperature
- Mental depression
- Osteoporosis or osteopenia
- Poor memory
- Premenstrual tension
- Sleeping problems
- Thyroid problems
You may have noticed there is a blatant disregard for adrenal gland evaluation and treatment by conventional medicine. Why is that? In conventional medical training there is almost no training in this area. Mild to moderate imbalance of adrenal function remains under the radar. There seems to be only two recognized states: functioning, or failure. There is no category for substandard function.
Basic testing can be done through standard labs such as Labcorp or Quest. This information, when combined with looking at symptoms and how the body is functioning, can be very helpful. For many people it is useful to spend a little extra and get an saliva test done. This is done with a kit that you take home. Saliva samples are collected in the AM, Noon, Late Afternoon and Bedtime. This allows for a clear picture of how the adrenals are responding throughout the day. Insurance usually does not cover this type of testing but it can be done for around $100.
This is an example of cortisol results taken throughout the day:
Most treatment is done with herbal adaptogens. Adaptogens are substances that improve the body’s ability to adapt to stress. Examples would be:
- Rhodiola rosea
- Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice root)
- Vitamin C, vitamin B6, biotin, pantothenic acid, zinc, and copper
- Adrenal glandular extracts
There are many good supplement formulas that contain mixtures of ingredients such as those listed above.
In some of the more severe cases of adrenal fatigue, low doses of cortisone to replace the bodies natural cortisol may be required. This can be done safely if administered in the correct doses and monitored properly.
